Tree Care

bioTree‘s program is a research-perfected tree care system that maximizes results, eco friendliness, and safety. bioTree uses low impact, yet effective products to produce healthy plant growth, combat diseases, and defeat insects. Our daily focus is to make your outdoor spaces more enjoyable by reducing pests and promoting growth to extend the life of your trees and landscape plants. We provide additional recommendations to our clients on maintenance practices for their landscape to ensure you have the healthiest plants with the least amount of effort.

Tree Deficiencies

Fertilization

Plants need access to nutrients to grow strong root systems and fight natrually against disease, insects, stress, dieback and pests. Plants may need supplemental nutrition if they are growing on disturbed soils such as new construction, if they are young plants without an extensive root system, or if they are not growing as quickly as desired. Signs of a nutrient deficiency include light-colored leaves or prominent veins. Fertilizers and biostimulants can enhance growth in these situations, leading to more vigorous plant growth. At bioTree, we offer deep root fertilization in both the spring and the fall to fertilize trees and landscape plants so they can achieve their full potential.

Japanese Beetle

Japanese Bettles

Japanese beetles pose a significant threat to trees and plants, feeding on around 300 plant species. Their foliage feeding diminishes the visual appeal and weakens plants. Beetle infestations result in skeleton-like leaves. Recognizable by green heads and brown wings, adult beetles emerge in late June, and feed through early August. While some use pheromone traps, it’s counterproductive, attracting more beetles. Our solution involves a two-application treatment during peak feeding. Long-term strategies include planting less appealing species like red oaks, lilacs, spruce, and pines to manage populations effectively.

Evergreen Disease

Evergreen Disease and Insect

Evergreens, especially spruce, are susceptible to numerous diseases and insects that can decline their appearance and health. The most common ones afflicting spruce trees in the Midwest are Diplodia (tip blight), needlecast and spider mites. Diplodia infects the tops of branches and turns them yellow-brown. Needlecasts infect the older parts of the branch causing the needles to fall off. Spider mites feed on needles causing a similar look of needlecast. We have a three treatment protocol that protects evergreens during peak infection periods. This is typically done in the spring in the Twin Cities. Trees already infected can be treated to slow down the spread of the infection.

Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer poses a serious threat to green ash trees, prevalent in many Minnesota and Wisconsin yards. Larvae, the main culprits, feed on the inner bark, disrupting nutrient and water transport. Signs include D-shaped holes, dead branches near the tree’s top, and bark peeling off the tree. Infection is more a matter of when than if. For healthy ash trees, consider practices like proper pruning, fertilization, watering, and mulching. It is also recommended that ash trees be treated preemptively with insecticide. If infested, assess the tree’s value before deciding on treatment. Insecticide treatments, done annually or bi-annually, control and prevent emerald ash borer infestations. bioTree can treat for Emerald Ash Borer at all times during the growing season.

Apple Scab

Apple Scab

Apple scab is a very common disease on apple and crabapple trees in Minnesota. This fungus infects the leaves and the fruit of the trees, which degrades the appearance of the tree and the quality of the fruit. When infected, leaves will turn yellow and have brown spots. Often, infected trees will lose their leaves earlier in the season. When infected, a tree is more susceptible to other pests and problems. The best way to prevent apple scab is to plant resistant varieties. If you already have an apple or crabapple tree, fungicides can be used to control the disease. bioTrees’s program treats apple trees three times duirng the early season infection period to reduce the incidence of apple scab disease.

Aphid Scale

Other Disease and Insect Problems

Beyond these common treatment programs offered by bioTree, there are other diseases and insects that we treat. Some of those include Oak Wilt Disease, Dutch Elm Disease, Powdery Mildew, Bronze Birch Borer, Pine Bark Beetle, Aphids and Scale. We have an arborist on staff who can diagnose your tree or landscape plants problem and recommend an appropriate treatment program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions? bioTree has answers! Contact us if you have unanswered questions!

How do I know what has infected my tree?

There are many online resources available to help you diagnose. https://purdueplantdoctor.com/ is a great resource for learning more. We are happy to help you with a diagnosis. Typically, we will ask for you to first send us pictures. That way we can do additional research if needed and consult with our entire team. Some problems are simple to identify with pictures. But for the more challenging problems, we send one of our experts out to look at the problem in person. Occasionally, for a stumper we will collect a sample and send it off to a lab for diagnosis.

Will my tree or plant have to be cut down or removed?

Removal is one option when a plant is unhealthy. We encourage homeowners to evaluate the cost of treatment with the cost of removal and possible replacement. Often treating a tree or plant is less expensive than removing them. Unfortunately, sometimes the level of infestation or problem is too extensive and removal is the best course of action. Our experts will help you evaluate the situation and select the right plan.

Very pleased with bioLawn, their products, and their customer service. My lawn has never looked so good. Had been using one of the “BIG” commercial services previously, and they were terrible with regards to keeping their schedules and treating my lawn. Highly recommend bioLawn.

Niles from bioLawn gave us outstanding service. He spread fertilizer and sprayed for weeds every 4-5 weeks like clockwork. He was very professional, answered all our questions, and educated us about lawn care during our current drought. Our lawn has never looked so good.
